Das seit der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jh.s gebräuchliche Wort steht für einen »(musikalischen) Verkaufsschlager«. Engl. hit, von dem es entlehnt wurde, bedeutet zunächst »Treffer, Schlag«. – Zus.: Hitliste »Verzeichnis der innerhalb eines bestimmten Zeitraumes beliebtesten Sachen«, Hitparade »Rangliste der über einen bestimmten Zeitraum meistverkauften Musiktitel«.
